7. Brittany Street

Repping: Indianapolis

Influenced by hip-hop icons like Large Professor and J Dilla 24-year-old, Brittany Street’s songwriting skills are what set her apart form the rest. She raps and sings with an assertive flow that forces her listeners to see beyond her beauty and dissect her rhymes. Street’s music also reflects her days as an alto-saxophone player, and her talent is best described as electronic-jazz-meets-boom-bap.

Suggested Tracks: ‘Gone,’ ‘I-N-D-I-A-N-A-P-O-L-I-S,’ ‘Hello Hollywood’

Constantly getting thrown against lockers during middle school years is enough to make some people scarred and bitter as adults but not Brittany Street. She was picked on because of her small stature but dealt with her teen angst by writing rhymes. By the time she was in high school, the petite self-proclaimed martian (listen to her mixtape for an explanation for that reference) became a force to be reckoned with by fighting back lyrically and becoming so good that people began to try to battle her with little success.
Now at 24, she has already gotten the chance to work with some of her industry idols like Large Professor and J Dilla and appeared on a Le Da Soul, a mixtape tribute celebrating 20 years of De La Soul by Mick Boogie, Terry Urban, Lemar and Dauley and De La themselves. Her latest mixtape, Confessions of a Martian, released in partnership with illroots.com last year solidified Street’s place as a potential dominant force in the music industry. It showcased that the Indianapolis, Indiana native might be small, but her aggressive flow, lyrical prowess, writing skills, and nimble ability to switch back and forth between rapping and singing are why the budding super nova will continue to make a big impression on new listeners. GangStarrGirl.com caught up with her to talk about her songwriting camp Good comPENy, her father’s unique jazz history lessons and what’s next on her musical agenda.

Brittany Street has been flying under the radar for a little while. I first heard her about four years ago when The Patio was still around. I recall watching this diminutive lady approach the stage and thinking, “OK, she’s gonna be serious.” She attacked the microphone with an undeniable energy, and her voice cut through the chaos of the club: “I GOT MY SWAG BACK!” We were !all seeing her for the first time and she seized the opportunity to OWN us. She won.

Brittany is still the most potent female MC in Naptown. She’s actually top-tier with any rapper, regardless of gender. She can go from ferocious boom-bap to heartfelt R&B in a snap. She walks a fine line between “diva” and “home girl” with class and skill.

You’ll have a chance to see Brittany Street at the Jay-Z concert after-party March 20 at Mo’s Steakhouse, 47 S. Pennsylvania St. DOPE Couture will introduce its spring line. On the decks: alpha.live, DJ Indiana Jones and DJ Limelight. Jay’s band, The Roc Boys and DJ Neil Armstrong will be in the house. It will be the hottest thing going on Downtown.

Pre-sale tickets are $20; for information, call (317) 624-0720.

“Lights” (Live)

I recently did a show in Indianapolis for a bunch of the music heads. The purpose was  to preview some of the new material and get some feedback from some of the vets before I went to SXSW. I performed a track for the first time off the Quality compilation for Blind I titled  “Lights”.
